'Scary Movie' Makes a Killer Return, Opening to Franchise-Record $105.5 Million Worldwide

The wait is over, and it was worth it.

Paramount Pictures and Miramax’s Scary Movie made history this weekend, opening to #1 at the global box office and earning $105.5 million worldwide. Reuniting the Core Four for the first time in more than two decades, Scary Movie delivered the comedy event audiences have been waiting for, smashing records in the process.

The film debuted with $55 million domestically and $50.5 million internationally to become Paramount Pictures' biggest comedy ever and making it the biggest R-rated comedy at the box office in over 10 years. This stellar opening also marks the biggest opening weekend of the Scary Movie franchise both domestically and internationally.

Marketing Highlights

The film’s marketing campaign, led by President of Worldwide Marketing & Distribution Josh Goldstine, was designed not only to deliver the horror parodies that have made the franchise a cultural touchstone, but to reintroduce unapologetic R-rated comedy to a new generation. By reacting nimbly to major cultural moments, Scary Movie pierced the zeitgeist and remained part of the conversation throughout the campaign.

The first trailer debuted exclusively in theaters ahead of Scream 7, generating more than 300 million views through fan-recorded reactions before its official online release. The official launch delivered more than 410 million views in its first seven days, becoming the second-biggest trailer debut in Paramount history.

The campaign extended far beyond traditional movie marketing through original creative, digital content and experiential activations designed to keep Scary Movie at the center of the cultural conversation, including a Times Square "Shorty's Living Room" stunt (65M+ views) and a recreation of the iconic Nike basketball parody from Scary Movie 2. Social content for the film campaign topped 1B combined views.

The Core Four Return

Twenty-six years after first outrunning a suspiciously familiar masked killer, Marlon Wayans (Shorty), Shawn Wayans (Ray), Anna Faris (Cindy), and Regina Hall (Brenda) are back in the crosshairs and this time, no horror movie is safe. Scary Movie slashes through reboots, remakes, requels, prequels, sequels, spin-offs, elevated horror, origin stories, and every “final chapter” that absolutely isn’t final.

The new installment targets some of today’s most memorable horror titles – including Sinners, Weapons, and Get Out – while introducing new characters designed to bring in a new generation of fans alongside the devoted audience that made the original a pop culture phenomenon.
