Gunfight at OK Corral
Lonely Man
Making DVD Releases from Original VistaVision Masters
Two of the latest DVD releases, GUNFIGHT AT OK CORRAL and LONELY MAN were originally shot in VistaVision. Because the Eastman color camera negatives of the '50s are now approaching the half century mark, fading has limited the ability to use them as an image source. To recover the full color images, Paramount routinely recombines the YCM protection separation masters to create new 35mm internegatives. The YCM records were re-regestered to correct for shrinkage and optically down-converted to make a standard four-perforation 35mm internegative that could be used to make either a print or a film to tape transfer.
However it is now possible to transfer into High Definition directly from a VistaVision 35mm
film element. This has been done for several black & white films including
LONELY MAN. The transfer source was the original master positive finegrain
which was contact printed from the VistaVision eight-perforation
camera negative. The black & white image was not subject to fading.
GUNFIGHT AT OK CORRAL is the first VistaVision color production from which Paramount was able to create a new eight-perforation picture source for High Definition transfer. To do this the YCM protection separation masters were recombined to make an internegative. Because not all of the YCM elements could be registered, sections of the original camera negative had to be printed to an eight-perforation interpositive to cover for the poorly registered sections of the internegative. But the original negative was faded. To correct for the fading Cinetech, a film lab specializing in color restoration, processed the negative through their proprietary Restored Color Image technique. This process offsets the color degradation cause by a significant loss of blue in the emulsion of the original negative. The two new elements were then transferred to High Definition and down-converted for replication on DVD.
